We recently asked a Head of House at a Wiltshire Secondary School to talk about how the Acompanying Project made a difference in the life of Sam, one young person we worked with.
“A great deal of time is given to supporting all students with their transition from primary to secondary school. Reading Sam’s information and attending meetings prior to him joining our school. I believed there would be a great deal of support needed to ensure he would be successful at secondary. The main concern was behaviour and his relationships with his peers in and around school. During a meeting, I met John, the Accompanying Coach. John explained that he would continue his work with Sam through the transition period.
This added support was greatly appreciated, as I believe without this Sam’s start at secondary school could have been very different. John regularly met with Sam and introduced me to him as Head of House. I believe that as Sam trusted John he began to trust the school, its expectations, requirements etc. along with building a relationship with me.
I believe Sam’s transition may not have been so smooth for the school or for Sam without John’s support. John gave a true reflection of Sam, his behaviour and his personality, which helped me to build and sustain a professional relationship with Sam and his family.
Sam is managing well at our school and he still talks of John, nearly a year later. The service John and his team offers is valued and effective.
